Frequently Asked Questions
How often should my piano be tuned?
For most pianos in a home environment, I recommend tuning twice a year to keep up with seasonal humidity changes. New pianos may need more frequent tuning for the first couple of years as the new strings settle. For schools, churches, and professional musicians, more frequent service is often necessary. At a minimum, every piano should be tuned at least once a year to maintain its health and pitch.
How long does an appointment take?
A standard fine-tuning for a piano that is regularly maintained typically takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. If the piano is significantly out of tune and requires a pitch adjustment, the appointment may last closer to 2 hours. Repairs and other services will vary depending on the complexity of the work required.
What's the difference between tuning and voicing?
Think of it like this: tuning affects the pitch, while voicing affects the tone.
Tuning is the process of adjusting the tension of the strings to make sure every note is at the correct frequency (e.g., A440). This is what makes a piano sound "in tune."
Voicing, or toning, is the art of adjusting the density and shape of the hammer felts that strike the strings. This process alters the character of the sound, making it brighter and more brilliant, or softer, warmer, and more mellow, depending on the pianist's preference.
Preparing for Your Appointment
To help your service go as smoothly and efficiently as possible, please consider these simple preparations before I arrive.
Clear the Piano Surface
Please remove all items such as photos, books, lamps, and decorations from the top of the piano. This prevents accidental damage and gives me full access to the instrument.
Provide Clear Access
Ensure the area around the piano is clear of furniture, toys, or other obstacles. I will need space to move around and place my tool case nearby.
Sufficient Lighting
Good lighting is crucial for the detailed work inside the piano. Having a nearby lamp available is helpful, although I always bring my own specialized lighting as well.
A Quiet Environment
Aural piano tuning requires intense concentration. Minimizing background noise from TVs, radios, and other distractions allows me to do my most accurate work for you.
